About Me

Originally from Los Angeles, CA, I currently call Charleston, SC home...for now! I moved here to be close to my parents who relocated from L.A. in 2003. I met my fiance and gave birth to an extraordinary son whom we call "CJ." For this I am very blessed! If I do not accomplish another thing in life, I will have seen success for he is "perfect!"

I earned a B.A. in Journalism from California State University, Northridge in 1996 and currently, yet inconsistently, am working on a Masters in Communication at the College of Charleston where I currently work as an accountant in the Science Department. My professional backgound includes freelance writing, public relations, event planning, and a brief stint as a middle school teacher. I have had many accomplishments, and taking steps now to get back into the field of Journalism.

As a hobby, this year I started making custom jewelry using crystals in every piece. With the encouragement and support of my family, friends, and the members of a social organization to which I belong, the Low Country Women of Color, I am the owner of Stoned Custom Accessories by Kristen. I am taking this task day by day and allowing God to lead my steps.

I would love to write articles about motherhood, relationships, or whatsoever for ESSENCE one day...but most of all, I want to continue to be the best mother that I can be to my son.
