What Are Some of the Shopping TIps You Use to Get Great Deals?

Over the last year I've learned some pretty interesting tips for getting more for my money.

1. I love HOT fast food french fries - to make sure you always get yours hot ask for NO SALT. Since they automatically put salt on french fries when they cook them this forces them to make new fries to comply with your order. Once you have your hot fries then salt to your liking.

2. Always ask if you can get the sale price for an item, even when the sale was last week or will occur in the future. I did… Continue

Use Your Gift Cards Before Its Too Late

If you were lucky enough to receive a gift card for a Christmas present, you might want to hurry up and use it. With the economy worsening many retailers are entering bankruptcy and people who hold their gift cards are often left out in the cold.

People with Circuit City gift cards faced uncertainty about whether or not their gift cards would be honored when the company recently filed for bankruptcy.

Holders of Sharper Image gift cards were originally informed that their gift cards would not b… Continue

How to Slash Your Grocery Bill

Your grocery bill represents one of your largest monthly expenditures. In fact, only your housing costs (mortgage or rent) and transportation (car payment / car insurance) bills are higher.

Consequently, you can save significant amounts of money simply by altering your grocery shopping habits. One way to do this is by stopping by your local Aldi's supermarket before proceeding to your regular grocery store.

Aldi's is a no frills grocery store chain that provides high quality food at cheap pric… Continue

A Simple Tip For Saving Money at the Grocery Store

The next time you're shopping in your favorite grocery store remember this tip. Before picking up an item from the store shelf, first look high and low for a better deal.

Grocery stores place items that create the greatest profit in a location most easily seen by the consumer. This area is the shelf space between eye level and chest level of the average consumer. In supermarket terms this is prime real estate and manufacturers even pay supermarkets "slotting fees" to get their products placed h… Continue

Think You'll Find a Bargain at a Liquidation or Bankruptcy Sale - Think Again

As the economy turns from bad to worse several large retailers have declared bankruptcy. Circuit City, Linen-N-Things, and KB Toys are some of the big retailers that have closed their doors.

When these retailers hold highly publicized "liquidation", "going out of business" or "bankruptcy" sales, people clamor to the stores in search of great bargains.

Unfortunately, these sales are nothing more than a consumer trap. Here's why.

Frequently, a middle man or liquidator has purchased the bankrupt… Continue

Hi Alonzo!

Thanks for your comment! So true--we are definitely smarter and more eco-aware than people think. The problem is very few media outlets (sadly, including Essence) are addressing the issue.

And most importantly, you are right--every little bit helps. According to the Sierra Club, if each of us reduced our overall carbon footprint by just 2% per year, by the year 2050 we could actually avoid the worst effects of global warming. Now that's something!

For more inspiration, please check out our new online TV show for people of color like you doing their part to go green, The Soul of Green (www.SoulofGreen.com). Our premiere episode (broadcast this week in honor of Black History Month) featured Majora Carter, a black environmental justice advocate and founder of Sustainable South Bronx who breaks it down on how important green living is in OUR communities. Be sure to check it out!

Peace and blessings,

Bianca
