For years I have had relaxed hair and I love the benefits, however I got tired of all of the chemicals. Now I have been relaxer free for about a year and a half. I really don't have the time to be consistent with going to the salon so I am looking for way to better nourish my hair, control the breaking and promote growth. Help!
I feel you girl, I went natural in 2000, my scalp started to have sores and was very irritated. I went to the salon to get my hair flatironed and deep contitioning treatments every two weeks. This was costly but my stylist was generous and helped me out. I like to wear my hair curly in it's natural state a lot of times. Letting the hair loose helps a lot because you don't have to do too much to it just wash with a conditioning shampoo and try Miss Jessie's curling pudding or some Kinky-Curl products to define the curls and relive frizz to the hair.
Thanks for the information I am currently going through the website and I will definitely try anything to minimize breakage and promote growth. Thanks again for providing your expertise.
When I went natural in 2000...I kept my hair in braids until my natural hair grew out enough. Then I did the big chop.....After that I managed my own hair by doing two strand twists every two weeks. I only combed out my hair once every two weeks after I washed and used a detangling conditioner. For moisture I made my own products. I used a little glycerin and castor oil to twist my hair. I made my own hair oil using a mixture of Avocado oil, olive oil, Almond oil, Coconut oil, Shea butter from my local health food store. I kept my hair moist in the summer by spritzing with water.
There are lots of natural hair tutorials and videos on www.youtube.com
I just did the BC (big chop) 6 Apr 09 (courtesy of my great grandmother, lol). As of now I have a small fro. I have 4b type hair (thick, nappy, and kinky) lol. My problem right now is finding products that can retain moisture in my hair and help make it soft. Right before I came to this website I was surfing the net for products. I just purchased the whole Redken All Soft Collection (even though its geared toward "others"..... sistas on the net have spoken highly of Redken). I also purchased Emu Shampoo & Conditioner and ProFolla Silk Moisture Shampoo and Conditioner from healthyhairplus.com. I figured buying 3 different products atleast one brand should come out a winner, right?? lol. After seeing all the sistas on youtube posts their natural transition journeys they actually gave me motivation and inspiration to do the BC. If anyone is thinking about doing the BC...GO FOR IT, I dont regret it at all.
I did the BC Feb 1, 2009. This pic is from Aug 2008. What works for me is moisturizing with Wave Nouveau, use Aphogee Products once a month for shedding. Wash once every two weeks with ORS Shampoo and Deep condtion with ORS penetrating pak. Spritz my hair in the mornings use a leave in conditioner and go. My hair is shiny with defined bouncy curls. I'm loving it.
I did the BC Jan 09. I woud have transitioned my shoulder length hair if I could do it again. Nonetheless, my hair is growing very nicely. It took awhile to figure out what works with my coarse/coily hair. However, I now love Oyin handmade products! Their store is open every Saturday in Baltimore, MD. If ur not in the DC area, try this http://www.oyinhandmade.com/ I also like organic root stimulator mayo condish. I also love natural oasis oil. I use www.justbeautifulhair.com (tea shampoo & hair food) for my daughter who is 1.
