Hello everyone! My girlfriends and I are planning on attending the 2010 Essence Music Festival. It is about 12 of us and we just wanted to celebrate each other. We have all just completed college or will be completing college up in May! I thought that this would be a great time and place to go and celebrate all of our accomplishments! I wanted to know what are ideal places for us to go, parties to attend, etc. Are there different concerts each night of the event, are there many night clubs around? I just wanted to get an overview of what all usually goes on during the festival. We are between the ages of 21 and 25.

The Essence is a very nice event if planned well. I have been going for several yrs and i learn something new each time. You didn't say where you guys were traveling from. I live about 3 hrs away. I usually book my hotel as early as i can. I always purchase floor seats. You cannot dance in the stands. You are free to walk around easier. There are a lot of performers in the superlounges as well but it's hard to get into those rooms if you are not at the door early. I don't usually focus on the superlounges unless there is someone i must see. Wear comfy shoes. If you wear heels, you will regret it. A lot of walking. Also go to the convention center. There are a lot of famous people there and you can take pics with them. There is very good food in the dome. Soul food. Plenty of restaurants in walking distance. You guys must be extra extra careful in N.O. Stay together. They will advertise about a lot of after parties. I am glad that i didn't purchase ahead of time. I was exhausted by the time the Essence party was over. Maxwell came late. Didn't start performing til one a.m. If this is your first yr. You will learn your way. Hit me back if i can be of further help to you.

There will be concerts each night of the festival with different entertainers each night. There's night club after night club on Bourbon Street. And don't forget the food it's excellent. One place I suggest you eat is Ralph and Kacoons located on Tallouse St. it crosses Bourbon St.

We are traveling from Albany and Valdosta Ga Karen! We plan on getting there Thursday so we can enjoy the city for a night before all of the fun starts! Our hotel is booked! Thanks for the advice about shoes and the Superlounges. I also wanted to know what is a good time to head to the action?

The concerts are 3 nights and there are people performing on the mainstage and then there are acts performing in the super lounges. We usually go 2 of the 3 nights to the concerts. You usually go the concerts about 7 or 8 p.m. and you leave about 2 or 3 in the morning. Everything you need is in the superdome; there are food and drinks in there. My advice is to make sure you dress comfortably unless you plan on sitting in your assigned seat all night. This past year for instance we went and saw Teena Marie and Lionel Richie on the main stage and then left and went to see Raphael Saadiq in a superlounge before Maze performed. It was incredible!!! My husband is a fan of Lala Hathaway and she was performing in a superlounge and we tried to get in but it was already filled to capacity. When we first started going (years ago) to the festival we would leave the superdome and go into the french quarter and party until the sun came up!! This past year though we went back to the hotel and hung out with our friends because we came from different states.

There is a lot to do in the N.O. There are great malls, there are the cemeteries to visit (above ground burials), the aquarium, the French Quarter, as well as going to see the great houses that are built there. You are also able to do tours- there is a lot of history there as well as the great food and restaurants. Everytime we go I get sad when we leave because the people of N.O. are so nice and inviting. I have been to the N.O. so many times (pre and post Katrina) and have never had a bad experience. Its also a wonderful experience to be around so many black people and everyone is so loving with no issues. It is a great place to meet new people.

We have already booked our reservations for 2010. Let me know if you want to know anything else.

Hi everybody! I am planning to attend the festival in 2010 as well and have some of the same questions as Carla. Its about 10 of us who want to go but some of my friends want us to plan all of our activites before we get there- they are worried that there is not going to be anything to do if we opt not to go the concert? Also I am trying to choose between 2 hotels one on canal st and the other on camp st. What are some things to take into consideration as far activites and seminars, how do I go about getting tickets for other events, parties, etc. We are between 25-30 and traveling from NC and VA
