Chrisette Michele At first sight of R&B songstress, Chrisette Michele, one would agree that she looks very comfortable in her hoodie and jogging wear. Her meek and mild behavior came across very street savvy to me.
All that changes, though, when she gets out on stage. It's like a new persona emerges. Her energy was unleashed, as if a tiger to be tamed. Michele, who was dressed glamorously from head to toe, made me take a second look. Her husky voice makes her even more irresistible and made her competition for yes, even Keyshia Cole.
Opening for Maxwell may be a tough duty, but Michele looked as comfortable on stage as when I initially first met her. "I've watched Maxwell's show three times. He is incredible. I am truly blessed to be on this tour." Michele played Buffalo, NY this past Sunday and Examiner.com had the pleasure of sitting down with her before sound check.
Initially on the same record label as Jay-Z, how did he get you on "Lost One"?
I guess he liked my voice. He was away when I got signed, so when he got back he was disappointed that he didn't sign me personally, so putting me on "Lost One" was his kind of his stamp of approval.
On a more somber note, Michael Jackson—how has he impacted/influenced your life?
Michael Jackson is America. He is American culture. He is pop culture. He is the structure of America. He is excellent. He inspired many in music, but outside of music he makes me want to feed the hungry and help others. I dedicate a song to him in every one of my shows.
Where were you when you heard the news that he passed?
At a hotel getting ready to go to the venue for a show. That was unbelievable. I really never say he is not here, but he is, but just in a different kind of way.
Your new album is called Epiphany—how ecstatic are you?
Super ecstatic—ecstatic that I have another album. Most musicians don't have a second album. Then it debuts at number one-it's soul music! I'm not a pop star and don't aspire to be one. I can exist in every genre. I'm not a slave to any genre. I'm just glad people are receptive to my creativity.
How has the music industry changed you?
I haven't changed. I've always been a go-getter. My mom has been by my side always. I can now say that I'm not afraid of anything! At first you know I was worried that are people gonna like me? Are people going to like my sound? Now, it's more like let me deliver my soul.
