What Are Your Plans for Inauguration Day?

Some people are calling it the "great Black migration" as millions of African Americans have put in for their vacation days early and taking off to Washington, D.C. to witness history in the making as Barack Obama becomes the next President of the United States.

The Editors of ESSENCE.com want to feature ESSENCE Community members on our home page on January 20. Tell us how you plan to experience the inauguration of the President-elect. Will you driving cross country to be there in the midst of it all? Did you find a way to get tickets? Will you be sharing the experience with your children at home? Will you be planning a brunch for your girls to watch it together?

Let us know what's on your mind and you could be featured one of our featured community members.

I was granted two tickets for a reserved section at the inauguration. My 24 yar old daughter, Nicole, who lives in DC will accompany me to this historic event. I feel so honored and privledged to have the opportunity to view this historic event up close. I plan to attend some of the inaugural related activites. But, my main goal is to be at the inauguration in order to witness history in the making. I will travel via train from CT to DC. I am so excited!

Hello,

My friend and I are celebrating Inauguration Day with my friends who are hosting an Obama Party with their new son, and family complete with Champagne, food, love, laughter and tons of tears!! We'll all witness history together, a day we'll never forget, we are so excited!! We can't wait to see President Obama and his Beautiful family take the stage and just blow us all away.

Thank you Jesus for letting Martin Luther King Jr.'s Dream come to pass, a day that I thought I would never see in my lifetime. God Bless the Obama Family and Everyone!

Unfortunately, we can't make it to D.C. But, without a doubt I have to share this moment with my 2 young daughters who now know that everything is possible. I really couldn't imagine being anywhere else, but watching their little faces, their smiles, their amazement and answering any questions they may have about this amazing historical moment. My husband and I will definitely gather them around and watch as a family, with mom and mother-in-law on hand too!

History will be made within the next few days. Black people we have a lot to be thankful for. We have came a long way and we have a long way to go. We will be celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. 80th birthday. Also we will be witnessing our FIRST BLACK PRESIDENT IN THE WHITE HOUSE! After Tuesday the media will no longer have to refer to him as PRESIDENT ELECT-OBAMA........HE WILL BE PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA!!!!! For those who dont know "OBAMA" MEANS BLESSED......Ok now back to the question...lol My mother and I will be attending "20th annual King Community Prayer Breakfast" in Grenada,Mississippi. These events are special moments to me. My mother, father and uncle was arrested during the movement in the 60's. So just to see them and my grand-parents witness these events is something special. The speaker for the day will be Gary Anderson a Byhalia, Mississippi native who lives in Jackson, who is the first African-American to serve as the State Fiscal Officer for the State of Mississippi. STAND UP BLACK PEOPLE!! STAND UP!!!

The entire Obama journey has been a family journey for us. My husband and children, his mom and brother, and I watched election night coverage together, and we've been watching inauguration event coverage together (his grandmother came over to watch the Lincoln Memorial special with us). Tomorrow, the kids will be at school and mom will be at work, but she will be watching, and my husband and I will have brunch while we watch/record the Big Event. Then we'll replay it later for the kids to see. They are especially excited to be a part of history, seeing it in the making.

I work in a public school and we are doing a mass assembly program with all the students so that we can watch live. And everyone will be wearing their Obama Fatigue and I will be wearing my Pearls, for Michelle.
