What Are Your Plans for Inauguration Day?

Some people are calling it the "great Black migration" as millions of African Americans have put in for their vacation days early and taking off to Washington, D.C. to witness history in the making as Barack Obama becomes the next President of the United States.

The Editors of ESSENCE.com want to feature ESSENCE Community members on our home page on January 20. Tell us how you plan to experience the inauguration of the President-elect. Will you driving cross country to be there in the midst of it all? Did you find a way to get tickets? Will you be sharing the experience with your children at home? Will you be planning a brunch for your girls to watch it together?

Let us know what's on your mind and you could be featured one of our featured community members.

(You must have a photo of yourself available to include with your story.)

I am gonna take the day off work. I am gonna have my Obama breakfast. That will be 2 big chocolate chip pancakes which represents Obama and Michelle. I am gonna have a glass of sunshine. Which is a glass of orange juice to represent those 2 daughters that are the sunshine of their lives. I am gonna have some strawberries on the side that will represent their sweet love as a family. I am gonna top it off with whip cream which will represent the whupping he put on McCain. Let the inaguration begin. I am almost in tears now just thinking about it. I just wanna be in front of my television savoring the moment.

I plan to watch the events in my living room with my Boo! What an historic event, but I am a Washingtonian, and don't want to miss anything, and I don't need to be in the "thick of it" to feel like I have had participated. All that voted for Barack Obama participated. Peace

She is 74 years young, she has eleven children, what better way to spend this historical day in the history of this nation then with our mother, Marie Bethune, and watch her witness this blessed event together. For it was the prayers of the elders from the past and the now who spoke of great things over the children.

When we talk about President-Elect Barack Obama, she still shakes her head, and says wow…”Who would have ever thought...and her eyes fill with tears...!!!

I have not decided whether to go with the bus from one church or stay and watch from large flat screens at another church. Either way I am expecting God to work a miracle in the minds of black people all over the world. It takes character and a good heart to lead people. Obama has a professional and decent crew. As Shirley Chisolm said, "What do I want...My God...what does anyone want?" We want CHANGE FOR THE BETTER!

Well, I will riding a charter bus to D.C. with my grandmother-in-law as well as some other faithful and fun loving folks from Louisiana. We will be staying in Richmond, Va. as the bus will bring us into D.C. I plan to relax during the ride to Virgina and read a couple of good books and at some point take pictures of the group on the bus and maybe even attemp to put together a video of my trip to D.C. I plan to put together a questionaire for the lucky few that I will approach and maybe even give some bold characters a chane to "have thier say". If the footage is okay I just might submit the tape to our local news station to give the folks back home (Louisiana) who could not make it to D.C. a chance to experience what the media will not show them. Which is the warm nature and over joyed hearts of all people.

I'm heading to Washington with my 20 yr. old son, 15 yr. old daughter, & 2 good friends. My friend Gina & I grew up together in the Bronx, and as kids used to attend the African American Day Parade in Harlem every year with our families. Next week she turns 50 and we thought what a perfect conjunction of events - The 5 of us are going to cry, laugh, wave, and meet a bunch of Happy People! I'm thrilled like a little kid, and to be able to share this with my children is more of a
blessing than I deserve. I always told them I wanted us 3 to take a once-in-a lifetime trip together before they move on to
husband, wife, kids of their own - never dreamed this wuld be the trip. Better than any vacation to a foreign land - joy,
celebration, hope, beauty, and so much more right here at home next week! I can't wait - only the 15 yr. old is all blase'
about the inauguration - the rest of us are wound like 5 yr. olds on Christmas Eve!

We just arrived in D.C. this afternoon and will be covering this historic Inauguration as credentialled press for our conscious television show, www.ConsciousLivingTV.com. As press, we will be given access to film and attend many events taking place throughout the week. Unlike most other media outlets, we will be celebrating our new president in eco-conscious style--from the clothes we wear on the red carpet to driving an eco-friendly hybrid rental car and the metro to get around town, even eating at some of D.C.'s hottest organic restaurants and going to a couple great yoga classes to keep us health and in balance throughout the hectic week!

As far as official festivities, 1) we are attending the first ever OM Ball--the first ball dedicated to consciousness and spirituality put on by Inspired Yoga, one of the best Yoga Studios in D.C. located in the U Street Corridor, 2) the Green Inaugural Ball being headlined by Wyclef Jean himself, 3) the Inauguration itself on the National Mall and many other events! Eco-Haute couture provided by Leila Hafzi designs, M the Movement and Stript toxin-free makeup. Stay tuned for our daily Conscious Inauguration Blog beginning this weekend at www.ConsciousLivingTV.com.

Peace and see you in the Chocolate City!

My husband and I are going to Centennial Park in Atlanta, GA. My daughter's school will be one of the bands playing in DC and I believe they are doing something at their school. There will be a live remote broadcast with a local radio station. I think all companies should let employees off a half day at least to enjoy and witness this very historic moment!!

I worked very hard (as a volunteer) with the campaign effort here in Tallahassee, Florida to help Barack Obama win the presidency. Unfortunately, I will not be attending the Inauguration event in Washington D.C. But I will be gathered with friends and relatives in front of a huge TV screen savoring this great moment in history. Oh, what a day January 20th is going to be!! So many people will be able to rejoice because Dr. Martin Luther King assassination was not in vain and his dream is still alive and well. THANK YOU JESUS!!!
